Objective: Secure and survey the abandoned East Somerton ruins, while evading paranormal drone hijacking and engaging in unexpected local interactions.
Mission Brief:
Operation East Somerton was initiated at 1100 hours, with the primary objective to reconnoiter the ruins of a church abandoned since the 1600s. Secondary objectives included an investigation into local folklore—namely the rumored witch’s leg buried beneath the tree—and testing the limits of drone technology in a potentially paranormal environment.
Preliminary Recon:

Arriving on-site, initial aerial reconnaissance using drone technology was underway by 1130 hours. The overgrown ruin, still standing against the forces of time, presented no immediate structural threat. However, while surveying the central tree (suspected to be linked to a buried witch's leg), hostile forces unexpectedly intervened. A previously unidentified paranormal entity took control of the drone, leading to immediate loss of control and subsequent crash. No damage was sustained to personnel, but the camera was compromised. Footage anomalies have been attributed to this supernatural interference.
After reestablishing manual control, visual and ground-based reconnaissance resumed without further incident. The central tree appeared stable, though the surrounding terrain showed advanced stages of decay, both structurally and spiritually.
Unexpected Encounter:
At approximately 1200 hours, while conducting field repairs on the drone, an unknown male subject approached. The subject, approximately 40 years of age (though unconfirmed), arrived on-site via bicycle. The subject identified himself as a climber, albeit one without much to climb in the Norfolk region, due to the absence of anything resembling a vertical challenge. The individual stated that, in lieu of traditional climbs, he had turned his attention to unconventional targets, such as the central tree in the ruins. However, he had yet to successfully summit the tree and expressed a vague intent to complete the task on a future visit.
Despite his climber status, the subject had no plans to ascend the tree that day. Instead, he explained his presence as purely recreational—stating that the site served as an ideal location to consume several beers. He proceeded to fulfill this mission, consuming the beers before cycling away in the oddly warm afternoon sun. His departure marked the end of the engagement.
Debrief:
Operation East Somerton was an overall success, despite the unanticipated paranormal interference and unusual local encounter. While no tangible threats were identified, the witch's leg beneath the tree remains an ongoing area of interest. Personnel remained unscathed, though the drone may require additional calibration after its brief possession.
Further investigation into local climbers of questionable judgment may be warranted, though the likelihood of recurring encounters remains low. Extraction from the site was completed by 1300 hours, with all objectives met.
